Expect More Taxis and More Accountability
The Taxi & Livery Transport Commission must focus on the needs of the
citizens of Calgary rather than on the preservation of the taxi duopoly
which currently exists.
Currently, city council does not require elected officials to sit on the
Commission, which proposes policy on taxi and limousine drivers, brokers and
vehicles in the city of Calgary.
There are two major taxi companies in Calgary which handle 85% of all
business, their business being to ensure that this situation does not
change.
Because of regulation, it is difficult to recruit drivers to serve the
market, especially short-term drivers who can assist during the busy
Stampede and Christmas party seasons.
Thus, Calgarians are being put on hold when they phone for a cab, while
cab companies feel no pressure to allow for more competition and better
service.
We wouldn't regulate the number of ice cream shops in the city; why are
we regulating the number of cabs?
Sandy Jenkins will push for greater
elected accountability on the Taxi & Livery Transport Commission, and advocate to allow the free
market dictate the number of cabs needed on Calgary streets.
