Expect Curb-side Recycling
When it comes to recycling, Calgary is 20 years behind other major Canadian cities. Actions speak louder than words, and considering the lack of action on this issue, our municipal leaders are speaking softly and without credibility.
For many Calgarians who consider the environment to be their number one concern, there is a latent lack of trust for our civic leaders when it comes to curbside recycling. Because of this, residents in apartment blocks and condo units are forced to drive long distances in order to be good to the environment, which defeats the whole point of doing it in the first place.
The status quo taken by City Council is even more baffling when one considers that organics make up 30% of our landfills, and are a significant producer of methane gas, which is a far more harmful contributor to the greenhouse effect than carbon dioxide.
There are other municipalities across North America and the industrialized world which deliver organics to facilities that, through exposure to ultraviolet radiation, convert the waste into fertilizer which can then be sold at a profit.
Time has come to call our leadership to account and initiate a pragmatic and responsible recycling program.
Sandy Jenkins supports a curb-side recycling program which includes plastics and organics. He believes that multi-family residential units should be included in this endeavor.
Sandy Jenkins also advocates a levy on residential and commercial garbage which exceeds normal usage. Money from this levy would be used to support the recycling program.
Finally, Sandy Jenkins supports the construction of a recycling facility which would convert ordinary organic waste into profitable fertilizer and other organic products.
Let's join the 21st Century. A vote for Sandy Jenkins is a vote for progressive recycling measures.
