Expect Open and Honest Electioneering

Taxpayers should expect that their elected leaders have not bought their way to office and that they properly reveal their contributors.

The simple fact of the matter is, the city of Calgary has no campaign finance rules to

speak of. Audits rely on the honesty of the candidate, and no such rules exist to limit the size of individual donations.

There are also no rules limiting the amount any candidate can spend in a given election, meaning that incumbents and wealthy opportunists have a disproportionate advantage over the average citizen in getting out their message.

After a campaign is over, any monies remaining is left at the sole discretion of the candidate. Even if a candidate drops out before the nomination date, he or she is under no obligation to return the money or provide information as to how the money is to be spent.

Sandy Jenkins will propose stringent campaign finance rules which will limit the amount of money donated by any individual backer, and which will limit the amount of money any individual candidate may spend. Candidates will also be forced to sign a pledge which will indicate what will happen to surplus funds at the end of any given campaign.

Under a Sandy Jenkins administration, Calgarians will be assured that their political leaders have been elected in a fair and open manner.
